Degradability: The results of hard tissue implants involving Biobase in animal tests (rabbits. miniature pigs, guinea pigs and Wistar rats) show that bone deposition on Biobase occurts without connective tissue. Osteochonductivity takes place between the implant and the newly generated bone in the implant site, inovolving extensive depostition of bone directly over the entire surface. Material bioresorption begins at the same time. Degradation ensues: Due to its physiochemical solubility and as result of cellular rection (phagocytosis).
The resorption of the substance is continually compensated for with new autologous bone. The resorption time (9 month to 2 years) depends on the size of the defect being treated as well as the efficacy of the metabolic processes at the implant site. After appox. 4 month the Biobase-filled defect is ready to receive an implant.
Biobase is a tempotary bone substitute granulate which is replaced by new bone as it is resorbed. In contrast, granulates based on hydroxyapatite (manufactured chemically or extracted from bovine bone), are only sligthly resorbable or not at all, thus remaining in the body as an exogenous substance.
Biobase exhibits excellent recipient tissue compatibility for the recipient. The material is synthetically produced so that the transmission of microbial pathogens and infections can be completely excluded.
In contrast to biological glass, Biobase contains only chemical components normally found in human tissue or tissue fluids. These components are either incorporated by the body tissues or excreted, so that no exogenous substances remain in the body. When coming into contact with aqueous media (e.g. tissue fluid) Biobase has a pH-value which lies within the physiological range of 7,4.
The alpha form of Biobase was selected (sintered at high temperatures) because the compact sintered granule can be degraded by ionization / hydrolysis. The crystalline strucure of ɑ-TCP, bound to the contact sites by so -called contact necks, leads to the generation of a compact sintered granule. This granule is very stable and cannot be disintegranted into particles. Therefore Biobase cannot be washed away in small particles or even removed by the lymph system.
The application of Biobase is straightforward and without any risk.
Biobase is available in 1 ml and 10 ml bottles and can be reserilised repeatedly with steam. Biobase is supplied sterile and pyrogen-free. It has a shelf life of 5 years when stored in the intact original packaging at room temperature.
